How to Fix an iPhone That Can’t Update Apps

To make the most of the space on your iPhone, you need to know what’s on it in the first place. Look at what’s taking up the most room in your storage, so you know where to start.

Open Settings, tap General and scroll down to iPhone Storage. Choose this option to see a list of the different types of files and media on your iPhone that are taking up space. As shown below, Apple might also suggest ways to free up space, like watching videos you already have on your device.

Optimize iPhone Photo Storage

Photos are one of the worst offenders when it comes to taking up space on your iPhone. But the iPhone’s settings menu has a setting that lets you save smaller versions of photos instead of the originals if your phone is running out of space.

Instead, these high-resolution photos and videos are kept in iCloud, from which you can download them as needed. Open the Settings app to make sure that this feature is turned on. Then scroll down to Photos and make sure that the Optimize iPhone Storage option has a blue check mark next to it.

Save Photographs and Videos to the Cloud

Remove files from your iPhone to free up space. But keep your photo collection the same. Instead of keeping photos on your device, consider Google Photos, and it’s a fast approach to clearing up storage without sacrificing memories.

Before deleting images, check sure they’re backed up or in Google Photos. Before deleting photographs and videos, back them up to Google Photos, Dropbox, Box, or OneDrive. This post explains how to migrate your iCloud photo library to Google Photos. However, limitless free storage is no longer accessible.

Why use a separate cloud service if your photos are in iCloud? iPhone photos are also deleted from iCloud, so you’ll need another provider.

Uninstall Unused Apps

Getting rid of apps you no longer use another great way to free up space on your iPhone. To know where to start:

  1. Look at the apps you used long ago.
  2. Open the Settings app on your iPhone, tap General, and then tap iPhone Storage. You’ll see a list of your apps, how much space they take up, and when you last used them.
  3. Scroll through the list and try deleting apps you haven’t used in a long time.

Offload Unused Apps

You can offload an app instead of deleting it if you don’t want to get rid of it. By offloading it, you can keep the files and data that go with it so you can reinstall it at any time and pick up right where you left off.

Open Settings, press General and then choose iPhone Storage to get back to the list mentioned above. Tap any app in the list and choose “Offload App.” You can also set your iPhone to do this automatically by going to Settings, tapping the App Store option, and ensuring the Offload Unused Apps switch is turned on.

Deleting Outdated Messages

iPhone storage may be clogged by more than photographs, videos, and apps. Deleting outdated texts can also help. Open Settings, choose Messages and select Keep Messages under Message History to remove iPhone messages automatically. Save text messages for 30 days, a year, or forever.

Delete Apps’ Videos and Music

There’s an easy way to find and erase offline films and music on your phone. Settings, General, iPhone Storage. Find an offline app, like Netflix. The app’s size and delete/offload buttons will appear.

You’ll find offline videos under the Delete App button, and swipe a downloaded video left to erase it.

Clear Browser Cache

If you’re desperate for space, try clearing your browser cache, although uninstalling apps and media will make a significant difference. Doing so could speed up your iPhone’s web browser if it’s low on storage and slow. It will sign you out of logged-in websites, though.

Clear Safari’s history and website data in Settings.

Tap the three dots at the bottom of Google Chrome, click History, then Clear Browsing Data. Browsing History, Cookies, Site Data, and Cache Images and Files should be checked. Tap Time Range near the top of the screen before clicking Clear Browsing Data.
