How to Fix an iPhone or iPad Screen

The screen on both the iPhone and the iPad turns nearly gradually depending on how you hold either device. Here are a couple of solutions to try if the display on your device is permanently oriented in either portrait or landscape mode.

iPhone Orientation Lock Off

If the display on your iPhone is permanently set to portrait mode and will not rotate to landscape mode, even when you hold the device in a landscape orientation, the Portrait Orientation Lock may be to blame. Thankfully, we can instantly disengage this lock by going to the Control Center on our iOS device.

To access the Control Center on a device with a notch like iPhone X, swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen.

Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to expose the Control Center on an iPhone 8 or older device with a physical Home button. This gesture is only available on devices with a physical Home button.

Locate the icon that looks like a lock with a circle around it, and it will be found in the Control Center. This icon will have a white backdrop if the Portrait Orientation Lock setting is active; otherwise, it will have a gray background. Deactivate the feature by tapping the button labeled “Portrait Orientation Lock.”

At the top of the Control Center, you will notice a message that reads “Portrait Orientation Lock: Off.”

Your iOS device should now flip to the landscape orientation automatically if you turn your iPhone on its side.

Disable iPad Rotation

Compared to an iPhone, an iPad’s screen can be locked in either the landscape or the portrait configuration. On the iPad, the feature is referred to as Rotation Lock for this very reason.

We will utilize the same method outlined earlier to disable the Rotation Lock setting on the iPad. It is essential to keep in mind that the steps necessary to access the Control Center on an iPad vary from one version of iOS (or iPadOS) to another.

Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen if you are using an operating system higher than iOS 12 or iPadOS 13.

Double-clicking the Home button on iOS 11 displays the App Switcher and Control Center on the right. Swipe up from the bottom on iOS 10 and before.

To toggle the rotation lock, tap the “Rotation Lock” button (a lock with a circle around it). The controller has a white backdrop when enabled and a “Rotation Lock: Off” message when disabled.

Restart the App

If the issue persists after disabling the Orientation or Rotation Lock, examine the app.

Quit and restart a stuck or crashed the app. First, open the App Switcher on your iPhone or iPad.

Swipe up from the Home bar and hold to open the App Switcher on newer iPhones and iPads without the Home button. Double-click your iPad’s Home button.

Find the app you wish to quit and swipe up on the preview.

Reopen the app from the Home screen. The app should now let you rotate the iPhone or iPad screen.

Reboot the iPhone/iPad

If the problem occurs in more than one app, it is likely caused by a flaw in either the iPhone or the iPad. The issue can be remedied in most cases by performing a short restart.

If your iPhone or iPad has a software Home bar, you can access the “Slide to Power Off” menu by pressing and holding the “Volume Up” or “Volume Down” button while simultaneously pressing and holding the “Side button.”

When using an iPhone or iPad with a physical Home button, you can access the power menu by pressing and holding the “Sleep/Wake button.” Then, to switch off the device, slide your finger across the “Slide to Power Off” slider with your finger.

The next step is to switch on the iOS or iPadOS device by pressing either the “Sleep/Wake button” or the “Side button.” While troubleshooting the issue, you should also restart your iPhone in recovery mode to see if this resolves the problem.
