We are back with another gaming review, and today, we are testing one of nubia‘s latest releases, the nubia Neo 5 Max.
Since the phone is equipped with shoulder triggers, we will be focusing on FPS and action titles to fully utilize its gaming features.
We also set up a live FPS tracker for reference throughout our testing.
First in this list is Call of Duty: Mobile. Our starting temperature was 35.8°C.
We set the graphics settings to the highest available options to see how the device would perform.
We noticed some stutters and frame drops on the home screen, particularly because of the amount of visual clutter. However, during actual gameplay, we were surprised by how minimal the stutters and frame drops were, even with the settings maxed out.
Although we did not maintain a consistent 60FPS throughout the entire game, the overall gaming experience remained smooth and responsive. We had no major issues during gunfights, and the shoulder triggers were also responsive.
The phone also handled the heat well. Even with the frame rate set to the maximum available option, we did not notice significant heat buildup during gameplay.
If Call of Duty: Mobile is one of your main games, the nubia Neo 5 Max should be able to handle it well.
Next is Delta Force. Our starting temperature was 36.7°C.
We headed into the graphics settings and turned everything up to the highest available option. Unfortunately, we could only pair the Ultimate frame rate option with Exquisite graphics quality, so we went with that combination.
In terms of performance, the phone delivered decent results. There were times when we experienced small stutters and frame drops during gunfights, but they were barely noticeable.
We also did not break the 60FPS mark, which was somewhat disappointing. Despite this, the overall experience remained smooth, particularly during field deployment. Considering that Delta Force features large-scale battles with multiple players shooting at each other, the device performed well.
Third on our list is PUBG Mobile. Our starting temperature was 36.3°C.
For this test, we set the graphics to HDR and paired it with the Ultra frame rate option.
The device delivered decent gameplay overall. Controls were responsive, and we barely encountered any frame drops or noticeable stutters. While the experience was not as smooth as a consistent 60FPS, the performance was still acceptable for a battle royale game.
However, we were expecting a higher frame rate considering that the game was set to Ultra. Still, from a performance standpoint, the nubia Neo 5 Max handled the game well.
Lastly, we tested Asphalt Legends. Our starting temperature was 36.9°C.
We set the game to the High preset and selected 60FPS.
We experienced some slowdowns during the initial boot and while navigating the menus, likely due to the amount of visual content on screen. However, once we entered a race, we did not experience any noticeable slowdowns, even with multiple animations happening on screen.
The shoulder triggers were also responsive and worked well for this game. If you are a fan of racing games, the shoulder triggers can be particularly useful and make the controls feel more convenient.
We were also supposed to test Fortnite on the nubia Neo 5 Max. Unfortunately, the game would not run while Developer Mode was enabled.
Turning Developer Mode off would allow the game to run, but we would no longer be able to track its FPS. Because of this limitation, we were unable to include Fortnite in our testing.
Overall, the nubia Neo 5 Max is a decent gaming phone, particularly for specific titles. It performed well across most of the games we tested, and we did not encounter any major issues with performance or temperature.
However, one of the biggest drawbacks for us is the phone’s size.
There were several instances when we struggled to control our characters because of the device’s large display. We found the size difficult to handle during extended gaming sessions.
That said, if you are looking for a phone with an almost tablet-sized display and dedicated shoulder triggers, the nubia Neo 5 Max is still a compelling option.
