HONOR Magic V6 Review

HONOR has launched a new addition to its foldable lineup in the local market, the HONOR Magic V6.

We got our hands on the device and used it as our daily driver during our recent trip.

After spending several days with it, here’s our experience with HONOR’s latest foldable smartphone.

Design

The HONOR Magic V6 offers a simple and clean aesthetic. The red variant has a more eye-catching, leather-like finish, while the white version features a matte finish. We recommend using the included case, as the phone can feel a little slippery when used without one. The case also provides a more worry-free grip and adds extra protection.

At 219 grams, the Magic V6 is relatively lightweight for a foldable. It also comes with IP68 and IP69 water and dust resistance.

In terms of thickness, the white version measures 8.75 mm when folded and 4.0 mm when unfolded, while the other color variants measure 9.0 mm folded and 4.1 mm unfolded.

Display

Since it’s a foldable smartphone, the HONOR Magic V6 comes with two displays. The cover screen features a 6.52-inch LTPO OLED display with FHD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and up to 6,000 nits of peak brightness.

Meanwhile, the inner display is a larger 7.95-inch LTPO AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate.

In terms of quality, as expected from a device in this category, the displays are impressive. Whether we used it for entertainment, browsing, or multimedia consumption, the overall viewing experience was excellent.

Even the animations on the home screen, such as the black hole animation, already looked great.

Outdoor visibility is also one of its strengths. Both displays can reach high brightness levels, making the screen easy to see even under direct sunlight.

We mostly used the device unfolded since the cover screen feels a bit narrow for extended use. However, for quick tasks, the cover screen can handle pretty much everything.

One thing we noticed is that the hinge isn’t particularly stiff, so there are only certain angles where you can position the device to give it a laptop-like setup.

Cameras

Moving on to the cameras, the HONOR Magic V6 features a triple-camera setup on the rear consisting of a 50MP main camera, 64MP periscope telephoto camera, and 50MP ultrawide camera.

For selfies, both the cover and inner displays are equipped with 20MP front-facing cameras.

Daylight Photography

Starting with the main camera, the daylight results are good, as expected from a flagship smartphone. Photos are sharp and detailed, with a good amount of clarity.

Colors are generally vibrant, although there are times when the color reproduction can look slightly pale. Despite this, the camera still produces good overall color reproduction and captures plenty of detail.

Low-Light Photography

For low-light photography, the HONOR Magic V6 provides a noticeable enhancement to darker scenes. Even when the environment is quite dark, the camera can still bring out the colors of the subject without making the image look unnatural.

Another thing we like is that there are no visible light flares, grain, and excessive noise in the photos. Overall, the low-light performance is impressive and allows the camera to capture usable and detailed images even in challenging lighting conditions.

Selfie Photography

Selfie photography, on the other hand, can be a bit inconsistent.

There are times when the results look good and detailed, while other shots can appear softer. The HDR processing can also sometimes produce a sharper-looking result, depending on the lighting and scene.

Despite these inconsistencies, the selfies generally maintain a true-to-life look, which I personally prefer.

Video Recording

For video recording, the rear cameras can shoot at up to 4K at 60fps, while both the cover and inner display selfie cameras can record up to 4K at 30fps.

Performance

Now that we’ve covered the cameras, let’s head back to the studio and talk about performance.

Under the hood, the HONOR Magic V6 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Our review unit comes with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Given the chipset it uses, the device can easily handle productivity tasks and heavy multitasking without noticeable issues. Performance remained smooth even with multiple apps running in the background.

Split-screen multitasking was also smooth and responsive. We also tried playing graphically demanding games, and we didn’t encounter noticeable slowdowns or stutters, even when playing at the highest settings.

Benchmark Results

  • AnTuTu benchmark: 1753966
  • Geekbench 6 CPU: 1038 / 4914
  • Geekbench 6 OpenCL: 13480
  • Geekbench 6 Vulkan: 19459
  • 3DMark Extreme: 5425
  • PCMark battery test: 20hrs & 57mins

Battery

For its battery, the HONOR Magic V6 is equipped with a large 6,660mAh battery, paired with 80W wired charging.

In a real-life situation, we took a photo of the battery percentage before starting our trip to the Bicol region on August 14. At that time, the device had 73% battery.

The battery eventually dropped to 21% on August 17.

Keep in mind that we mostly used the device for quick research, light tasks, and photography. Still, considering its large battery capacity and the fact that the always-on display was enabled, we were surprised by how long the Magic V6 lasted.

Price and Availability

HONOR Magic V6 has an SRP of PHP 119,999 for its single configuration of 16GB RAM + 512GB storage.

Verdict

Overall, the HONOR Magic V6 is an impressive foldable smartphone that checks many of the boxes we look for in this category.

It comes with a sleek and durable design, powerful performance, capable cameras, excellent displays, and long battery life. With all these features combined, we expect it to come at a premium price.

For those looking for a high-end foldable smartphone and who have a flexible budget, the HONOR Magic V6 is certainly a device worth considering.
