You are in no way alone if you have ever forgotten your iPhone plugged in to charge for the entire night. Many people who use smartphones, mainly iPhones, have gotten into the habit of charging their iphones overnight.
However, charging during the night has traditionally been frowned upon. It is a widely held belief that the battery life of a smartphone can be negatively affected by leaving the device to charge overnight in virtually any situation. If you want to know whether this is true, the quick answer is yes, but only sometimes or in every circumstance.
For Android: Is It Safe to Charge My Phone Overnight?
iPhone Batteries
Some people still overcharge their phones, ruining the battery. Using their phone while charging is also frowned upon. Some say iPhone batteries have “memory.” If your phone is partially depleted and you charge it, the battery “remembers” the reduced capacity it needs to achieve 100%, decreasing its capacity. Li-Ion batteries aren’t like NiCD and NiMH batteries.
Phone Charger
iPhone batteries are Lithium-ion. Cathode, anode, and separator make up your iPhone’s Lithium-ion batteries. When fully charged, Lithium-ions are on the battery’s anode.
They trickle to the cathode, generating power as Lithium-ions migrate to the cathode, battery charge decreases, and lithium-ion moves to the anode when you charge your iPhone.
Lithium ions pool on one side when your iPhone’s battery is full or low, putting it under stress. So, it’s true that you shouldn’t allow your battery charge to drop below 20% or surpass 80%.
What to Do If Your Charging Port Gets Wet
What Happens If an iPhone Is Charged Overnight?
Shortened Battery LifeÂ
Your iPhone’s battery will die faster if you charge it overnight, but not for the reason you think. Most people only trust their phones after some time because they believe they will overcharge if they leave their cell phone set for too long.
But this isn’t a big deal because iPhones and almost all other smartphones stop charging when they’re full. There is no chance of setting too much.
Overnight trickle charging affects battery life, and iPhone stops charging when it reaches 100%. Normal background processes will drain your iPhone to 99%. When this happens, the iPhone charger restarts.
This cycle continues all night, shortening your battery’s life.
Overheating
It can also get too hot when you leave your iPhone to charge for a long time. Even though this problem only affects newer iPhones less than it used to, you should still be careful.
If the heat has nowhere to go, it can worsen the overheating. If you charge your iPhone overnight under your pillow, the battery will get too hot and break.
Also, if you plug your iPhone into an outlet with many other devices, the machine will heat up even more.
Faulty Adapter
If you always leave your phone to charge overnight, the adapter and cables can wear out over time. Most of the time, this is because the battery keeps getting charged and gets too hot.
If you charge when the power changes, your charger could get a sudden burst of high voltage that could damage it. In the worst case, this could damage your iPhone’s integrated circuit (IC) chip.

It is not suggested that you leave your iPhone charging while you sleep, and it is preferable to charge your phone while you are out and about and then unplug it as soon as it reaches its maximum capacity. Nevertheless, whether you want to charge your iPhone overnight or not, the following are some best practices you can take to conserve the battery life of your iPhone.

@shoandtech Stop charging your phone overnight! Optimized charging isn’t as great as you think it is! #iphone #android #batteryhealth #tech #shoandtech
Shomes (Shoandtech), a user on TikTok, says there are better ways to do it. In the video, Shomes is seen using an iPhone 13 Pro that he has had since September 2021 and has a battery that can go up to 100%. He also has an iPhone 12 Pro with a full charge. What is it? He rarely changes his iPhone at night.
Even with Apple’s optimized battery charging, which learns from how you charge your phone daily to make it last longer, an iPhone battery is expected to lose about 10% of its maximum capacity in a year. Apple says an iPhone battery is “designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity after 500 full charge cycles when operating under normal conditions.” However, regular overnight charging speeds up the process by which the battery loses its original capacity.
Apple says that a complete charge cycle is when you’ve used up all your battery’s power. So, you can use 75% of your battery’s power one day, let it fully charge overnight, and then use 25% the next day. This is one charge cycle; using your battery every other day will be at 80 percent or less in less than three years.

I think charging iPhone overnight is very unsafe and will harm battery life. I found that charging iPhone overnight for a long time will cause battery health to decline. Even charging not working. For ios problems, I use TunesKit iOS System Recovery to successfully fix them. But charging iPhone overnight is still unsafe.
