Netflix’s Ad-Supported Plan Launches in November

The last time, we shared with you the upcoming availability of a more affordable Netflix plan. Unfortunately, there will be advertisements, and as of today, Netflix has established a timetable for when this will occur.

The streaming giant released its ad-supported subscription plan, “Basic with Ads,” on Thursday. The new plan will cost $6.99 (approx. ₱400) a month in the US. It will be available on November 3 in the following countries:

  • US
  • Canada
  • Australia
  • Brazil
  • France
  • Italy
  • Germany
  • Japan
  • Korea
  • Mexico
  • Spain
  • UK

The company said that “current plans and members will not be affected” and that “Basic with Ads will be a good addition to our existing Basic, Standard, and Premium plans, which do not include ads.”

The new option will be similar to Netflix’s Basic plan, which costs $9.99 per month but will have an average of four to five minutes of ads per hour.

These commercials will run for 15 or 30 seconds before and during TV shows and movies.

Netflix said it would offer broad targeting options by country and genre to help people find what they want to watch.

Advertisers will also be able to prevent their ads from appearing on content that might be inconsistent with their brand (e.g., sex, nudity or graphic violence),” — Netflix.

In April, CEO Reed Hastings said the company was open to advertising the service. This sent shock waves through the media and advertising industries since Hastings had been adamant that ads should not be on the platform for years.

In a letter to shareholders in 2019, Netflix said, “We … are advertising free, that remains a deep part of our brand proposition.”

But after 2022’s unfortunate events, the platform can no longer use that strategy.

In April, Netflix said it had lost subscribers for the first time in over a decade. After that news, the stock dropped, and the company’s market value went down by billions. Hundreds of employees were let go, and doubts about the platform’s future spread like wildfire, making people wonder if the streaming market could survive.

In July, Netflix said it would work with Microsoft to improve sales and technology for this new plan.

In the end, Netflix needs to make more money, and ads are one way to do that. This doesn’t mean all subscribers must watch ads since the existing plans won’t change. Instead, there will be a cheaper plan with ads and a more expensive plan without ads.

In the end, the future of Netflix will probably look different from what users are used to.

“The new Netflix ad-supported tier will help the streamer to staunch the bleeding of its subscriber totals, but it will pull most users from the company’s existing user base instead of expanding the pool of Netflix viewers,” — Insider Intelligence forecasting analyst Peter Newman.

On the good side of things! Netflix keeps investing in shows it thinks will bring in and retain subscribers.

Peters talked about popular movies like “Stranger Things” and “Extraordinary Attorney Woo,” as well as upcoming films like “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” that people are very excited to see.
