Use New Twitter Tool To Report Threats To Police

Twitter launched a new feature that could help users easily report threats demanding attention from police and other officials.

The process is easy. After the user filed a report about the threatening Tweet directed to him, the new tool would summarize the details of the report and send the summary via email.

“Clicking the ‘Email report’ button will send you an email that packages the threatening Tweet and URL along with the responsible Twitter username and URL and a timestamp as well as your account information and the timestamp of your report. Our guidelines for law enforcement explain what additional information we have and how authorities can request it,” it said.

But although the platform take threats of violence seriously and would suspend responsible accounts when appropriate, it strongly recommends to contact local law enforcement if concerned about physical safety. The new tool provided will only make the process easier for the user.

Twitter’s safety partner, the National Network To End Domestic Violence gave its feedback on the feature as to refine the reporting process for a more efficient and useful tool.

This is still up to individual users to warrant the reports for the attention of law enforcements

“We can’t compel law enforcement to act on threats (the user will have to do that him/herself), but we can provide users with the information law enforcement will request from them,” Twitter’s Nu Wexler said via Mashable.

Twitter indeed is taking their actions against violence seriously, for recently the platform also updated several of its anti-abused policies and improved abuse-reporting tools.

The new tool is now rolling out globally.
