China-Based Hackers Target PH in Cyberattacks

Hackers Target PH

A recent cybersecurity report by CrowdStrike has shed light on the increasing cyberthreats faced by the Philippines. Just few days ago, Philippine Coast Guard has once again been compromised by hackers, marking the fourth cyber attack this year.

According to the report shared by Inquirer, there is a growing concern over the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) by cybercriminals, particularly those backed by China. This advanced AI technology enables the creation of highly convincing text, images, and videos, making it easier for malicious actors to spread misinformation and gain access to sensitive systems.

Furthermore, the speed of cyberattacks is also on the rise, with the average breakout time decreasing to just 62 minutes. This swift pace poses significant challenges for cybersecurity defenses, as adversaries can quickly compromise systems and drop initial discovery tools within seconds of gaining access.

Fabio Fratucello, CrowdStrike’s Field Chief Technology Officer International, highlighted the implications of these developments, emphasizing that the Philippines is vulnerable due to high mobile and social media usage. He urged the public to remain vigilant and scrutinize information sources to discern authenticity.

The report also warns of the likelihood of Chinese, Russian, and Iranian adversaries utilizing GenAI tools for misinformation and disinformation campaigns.

How can individuals protect themselves from cyberthreats in an increasingly digital world?
