There is no longer a duopoly in the mobile market in the Philippines, according to internet analytics company Ookla, which cited DITO Telecommunity’s entry and expansion as enough of a disruption to break Globe Telecom’s and Smart-PLDT’s dominance.

What is Duopoly?

A duopoly occurs when two companies compete on the same market. The price or quantity of a product can be set by the two brands, thereby making customers pay more.

DITO Telecommunity also played an influential role in improving the availability and performance of 4G and 5G services in the Philippines, according to a recent study published by Ookla.

The country’s 4G availability, according to the data collected by its insights tool Speedtest Intelligence, increased from 80.6 percent in the first quarter of 2021 to 84.8 percent in the same period of this year based on the data from the insights tool.

According to Ookla, DITO had the highest 4G availability at 91.2 percent in the First Quarter of 2022, followed by Globe and Smart at 84.9 percent and 83.8 percent. According to Ookla, 5G availability in the country doubled from 9.4 percent in the first quarter of 2021 to 18.1 percent in Q1 2022, almost doubling year on year.

The improved availability of 4G and 5G in the country can be attributed to regulatory changes, such as an eased right of way rules.

By the end of 2022, DITO intends to reach 12 million subscribers, up from the almost 9 million that the company has by June 2022. For further information, you can read here: DITO Community Hits 9 Million Subscribers
