Both are carrying the IP 68 certification of Sony, which makes both devices water-resistant and dust-proof, while the Xperia Z5 Compact holds the upper hand in utility, with its fingerprint scanner, which is not available on the Xperia M5.

The Sony Xperia M5 sports a 5-inch IPS 1080p LCD display, while the Xperia Z5 is a smaller 4.6-inch 720p HD IPS Triluminos display. Quality-wise, both devices provided an excellent viewing experience, with their clear and bright display and accurately blended colours. Both devices support Sony’s Bravia display technology, which isn’t surprising as to why they are good in terms of colour accuracy, crisp and clear outputs.
If you prefer a more larger display, then the 5-incher Xperia M5 is sure to get you going, however, if portability is what you’re looking for, then the Xperia Z5 Compact is the perfect choice.

The Sony Xperia Z5 Compact carries a 23MP rear shooter, with phase detection feature, while the mid-range Xperia M5 carries a slightly adjusted 21.2MP rears shooter, with phase detection focusing feature and fast focus capability.

Outputs on the Xperia M5 showcases an amazing blending of colour accuracy and clear and bright images, combined with a very fast focusing speed, while the Xperia Z5 Compact excels in the detail-preservation and natural outputs. For low light shooting, the Xperia M5’s showcases a very noisy and dark output, though it is capable of controlling noise, however, Xperia Z5 Compact’s night shooting is truly better, brightness-wise and output-wise.
Video-wise, they dish out very decent video outputs, pertaining a very excellent video shooter, which is made by Sony. Both devices shoot 4K UHD video.

The Xperia Z5 Compact is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chip, while the Xperia M5 carries around a MediaTek Helio x10 octacore chip. For RAM and memory capacity, the Sony Xperia M5 carries an advantage in RAM, with its 3GB of RAM, while the Xperia Z5 has 2GB of RAM, while in terms of memory the 32GB internal storage of the Xperia Z5 is larger than the Xperia M5’s 16GB internal storage. For microSD expandability capacity, it seems that the Xperia M5’s 200GB limit is much more something to look at, in comparison to the standard 128GB limit of the Xperia Z5 Compact.

Battery life of both Xperia phones were expected to showcase greatness and they did deliver. The Xperia Z5 Compact was able to showcase a decent 11 hours and 6 minutes upon continuous playing of a 2-hour movie, while the Xperia M5 lasted almost a whole day in video playing time. For charging speed, we were able to determine that the Xperia Z5 Compact holds a 2-hour and 15-minute battery charging time, for the Xperia M5, it delivered an almost similar charging time in that.

Both phones are relatively good on their audio outputs, however, it could be heard that the Xperia Z5 Compact showcased more louder music outputs, which should be a very vital thing. However, audio on the M5 was felt to be a bit balanced, despite being relatively lower in volume, in comparison the Xperia Z5 Compact.

So it’ll actually depend on your actual budget on what device you should purchase.
