Local carriers have been told by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to stop including clickable links in text messages.
The current uptick in spam and frauds transmitted via SMS text messages prompted the creation of this new directive.
According to the NTC’s memorandum, which was sent to telcos on September 12, 2022, Globe Telecom, Smart Communications, and DITO Telecommunity are to “block or deactivate domains or Uniform Resource Locators (URLs), TinyURLs, Smart Links, and QR Codes emanating from malicious sites” using the most current database compiled by government organizations.

These organizations include the NTC, the National Privacy Commission, the Department of Trade and Industry, and law enforcement organizations.
The reports that were produced utilizing artificial intelligence and machine learning, as well as reports from subscribers, are also featured.
Additionally, until September 16, the said telcos are required by the memorandum to provide a compliance report to the Office of the Commissioner.
The NTC’s attempts to safeguard the public against “phishing, smishing, squishing, and other sorts of criminal activity,” according to newcomer DITO Telecommunity, have their support.
Then, Globe and Smart emphasized their ongoing efforts to combat SMS scams and spam.
