There has been a lot of activity from the telecom companies fighting fraud. However, there is a call for the public to keep an eye on the ongoing fraud on mobile phones.

There has been an increase in fraud schemes disguised as SMS in the Philippines in the past few years, often offering jobs at a “high rate,” which coincides with the country’s increasing shift towards digital technology. Senators cite text scam offering fake jobs - BusinessWorld Online

In a statement released on July 6, 2022, the Chief Information Security Officer of Globe Telecom Inc. (Globe) referred to SMS fraud mainly as a type of virus due to its constantly evolving nature.

As a safety measure, the public must be “double-masked” to prevent this from happening. More precisely, it ensures due diligence is applied to other telcos’ attempts to ward off these attacks.

There are several ways in which the public can protect themselves against illegal activity. As part of that, the executive recommends that people enable anti-spam features on their mobile devices, such as in Google’s Messaging app, and remain vigilant against scams.

Furthermore, he believes that by working together, both the telco and the end-users may be able to prevent the entire scheme from being implemented.

Additionally, Bonifacio reminds people that they can play a part in fighting SMS scams by actively reporting incidences on Globe’s Stop Spam portal, enabling them to combat these scams.
