Nine months after releasing the Magic3 clone X30, HONOR unveiled the X40. The X40’s central selling point is its curved AMOLED display, despite a few reduced features (charging is now 40w instead of 66w, and the selfie camera is now 8MP instead of 16MP).
It is also a relatively high-end model with a 120 Hz refresh rate, 300 Hz touch sampling rate, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and up to 800 nits of brightness. You would have difficulty finding a mid-range phone with a display that rivals a flagship.
Similar to the X30, the Snapdragon 695 CPU within the X40 can support up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Besides the display, the X40’s other distinctive feature is the enormous, spherical camera module on the back that has a sizable empty area in the middle.Â
The two cameras, a 50-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel depth sensor, are mounted atop the huge circular module’s black surface. Although we don’t know the reasoning behind the design, we assume it’s sufficient to set the X40 apart from the other mid-range smartphones on the market.
A sizable 5100mAh battery powers the device, while Android 12-based MagicUI 6.1 handles the software. Since the X40 seems to be limited to China, for the time being, don’t expect it to offer Google services.
