The lead developers of the game Ghost of Tsushima, Nate Fox, and Jason Connell, will be awarded as permanent tourism ambassadors of the city of Tsushima in Nagasaki after raising awareness about the island.

Mayor Hiroki Hitakatsu, the mayor of Tsushima, praised the duo for spreading both the name and the history of the city across the world in “such a wonderful way,” according to VGC.

“Even a lot of Japanese people do not know the history of the Gen-ko period. When it comes to the world, the name and location of Tsushima are literally unknown, so I cannot thank them enough for telling our story with such phenomenal graphics and profound stories,” thanked the mayor.

Usually, the award is bestowed only to its notable Japanese citizens. Now, this is the first time where recognition will be given to these individuals who shared and spread the “name and history of Tsushima through their works.”

The mayor even extends his gratitude to the whole development at Sucker Punch who was involved in the game as he wishes that the same recognition would also be given to each and every one of them. He thanked them as recognition of the island is increasing since the game’s release.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony will be held online and the duo will receive a letter of appreciation with the presentation of their award.

Since the release of Ghost of Tsushima, the real-world island of Tsushima has garnered countless recognition and even placed them on the world map. Fans of the game even banded together and raised funds to repair one of Tsushima’s historic Torii shrine gates that were destroyed by a typhoon. The local shrine priest, Yuichi Hirayama has acknowledged to the community that they were responsible for raising the big chunk of the donations that was collected through the Campfire campaign which he started to finance the repairs.

Ghost of Tsushima is available in both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles.
