The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said on Tuesday that a Filipino scientist came up with a cleaner fuel for cooking that could replace LPG Filipino Scientist Discovers.
Dr. Fiorello Abenes, a professor emeritus at CalPoly Pomona University in California and a DOST Balik Scientist hosted by Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in Ilocos Norte, made “Nipahol,” a fuel made from the ethanol extracted from nipa.

Abenes and his team at MMSU also came up with a stove that uses nipahol instead of LPG. The stove is powered by nipahol and has a burner, and it works because of the force of gravity.
Abenes stated that in many of the Philippines’ rural areas, dirty cooking is still a problem. He also discussed that when firewood or charcoal is burned, it releases particles and gases that are bad for your health. These gases and particles affect the respiratory system, especially in women.
“We have developed a prototype that we hope we can scale up and make into a cooking stove suitable for indoor use and commercial establishments,” he said.
The DOST said that Abenes recently oversaw the transfer of technology and commercialization of the Village-Scale Nipahol Technology prototype.
By building up the local academe staff, the DOST’s Balik Scientist Program hopes to speed up the flow of new technology into the country and encourage people to share information.
