GOOD NEWS! For students majoring in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) will be launching a scholarship program.
President Marcos Jr. instructed the DICT to award scholarships to STEM students during the Tuesday Cabinet meeting at the Malacanang Palace to address the “lack of talent for information and communication technology businesses.”
Aside from that, Filipino IT graduates “do not have the right tools and training required by the ICT industry,” according to DICT Secretary Ivan Uy.
According to experts, the Philippines must invest in addressing these problems to have a robust STEM community and remain competitive. According to some, spending money on STEM can improve the nation’s politics, economy, and educational system.
The scholarship program, however, will be unrestricted to STEM fields. STEM and non-STEM students who placed in the top 5% of their graduating class are eligible to apply.
On October 24, 2022, the Department of Science and Technology’s Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) encouraged Grade 12 students interested in pursuing professions in science and technology to apply for the 2023 Undergraduate Scholarship Program.
