If this news about Brazil fining Apple for the same reason feels very familiar, that’s probably because it’s not their first rodeo. Apple’s decision to take chargers out of its packaging to help the environment again costs the company time, money, and resources.
A few months ago, a court in Brazil told Apple to pay $2.3 million in damages and stop selling these phones because they didn’t include chargers in the package. Many think that taking the charger out of the packaging was done more to save money than protect the environment.
This is true even though the Apple iPhone is not a cheap phone, especially in Brazil, where it is sold.
The civil court in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has found Apple guilty of making customers buy a second item to make the first one work.
The Brazilian Consumers’ Organization filed this lawsuit, and Apple will have to pay $19 million in damages, which is much more than the first time. Aside from that, the company must also give chargers to everyone who bought an Apple iPhone 12 or 13.
It looks like this isn’t the end, but the way things are going might be soon. Apple is likely to argue in court against these legal claims.
