Umidigi A7S Review

Umidigi made phones from rigid smartphones to devices with a pop-up cam which is the trend on other devices. But have you ever heard of a phone with a thermometer built-in? Yes, there are DIY tutorials on how you will turn your phone into a contactless thermometer, but without knowledge in coding and hardware, it’s a no-go. There are also phones that already have that kind of potential but with a higher price. But the Umidigi A7S offers an infrared contactless thermometer at a much cheaper price.

Just like a thermal gun, It reads the person’s temperature without having contact with that person, and we are surprised with the Umidigi A7S having one of these unique capabilities.

Unboxing

Starting off with the unboxing, the box of the Umidigi A7S comes in white color, and inside is an envelope type of compartment that has the sim ejector pin, and the manual inside. Below is the device itself with a clear jelly case already installed. Underneath, the texture of the compartment box is kinda foamy and it has a power brick and charging cable with red and black color. The cable is already a Type-C cord.

Specs and Design

2Umidigi A7S boasts a 6.53″ HD+ screen in a 20:9 cinematic ratio, with a nearly outdated dewdrop notch housing an 8mp front camera. While the primary lens at the back is a 13MP triple cam with dual LED flash and with the thermal scanner at the bottom right part of the tiny rectangular camera module.

Here are some sample shots

Qualities are not that impressive but quite true to life, ultrawide is soft and washed out, then portrait mode has good accuracy but with a less focal point. And unfortunately, the portrait mode is only available on the rear camera. The video quality is only at max 720p which is kinda acceptable on the price range, I mean for the price, what can we complain about?

8Again at the back, it is made out of plastic, it has textured lines to prevent fingerprint smudges while adding grip. Umidigi A7S also comes in three different colors; Granite Grey, Sky Blue, and Peacock Green. It also has 9.45mm thickness and 195grams–the typical budget phone dimensions. There is no fingerprint scanner but you’ll get a Face Unlock.

Around the frame, the 3.5mm headphone jack is located on the top. At the bottom are the USB Type-C port, speaker grille, and microphone. The volume rocker and the power button are located on the right while on the left, is the simtray with dual nano sim slot and expandable storage slot. The independent shortcut key for the infrared thermometer and PTT also sits on the left side.

Performance

12Under the hood, it is powered by a MediaTek MT6737 quad-core chipset with 2GB of ram and 32GB of internal storage. The battery is backed with a 4150mAh battery and could take up to 10W of charging. Unfortunately, the charging brick that comes in the box is only 5W which is kinda bummer. With its performance, the battery capacity should be fine for a day of use.

The software runs in Android 10 Go Edition and if you didn’t know the Android Go Edition is a very reliable and useful OS for phones with less power. It makes the phone budget-friendly while still giving less heavy apps. And speaking of, Android Go has stock google apps such as; Google Maps Go, Gmail Go, etc. These apps have lightweight features and will not eat too much ram.

Navigating through the UI we know the fact that Umidigi A7S doesn’t have a super-fast launch time but with quite responsive software, it is unique and useful. As for connectivity and security, again it has a face unlock feature which is not that fast but secured. It also supports dual-band wifi, Bluetooth 4.0, and 4G LTE connectivity

So yes, this is more budget-friendly with a price tag starting with P3,699 and that price offers unique skills but be aware that it is for casual use only and not for Triple-A games

Infrared Contactless Thermometer

6Speaking of unique skills, the dedicated button is customizable with few gesture controls. By default pressing it once will instantly launch the thermometer app, but you can also assign different apps with different clicks.

Using the thermometer app is as simple and as easy as pie. Pointing it toward the forehead and clicking either the volume button or touching the measure button will start to measure the subject’s temperature. It is also available in objects and it keeps a record of your temperature in the record tab located in the lower right of the app. There is a color indicator if you have a mild cold or severe illness and it corresponds to a person’s average temperature. This is very useful amidst the pandemic especially if you alone are worrying about your condition. I wish the app could have been more than just a plain interface but it still does its job accurately.

Overall

4Again for the starting price of P3,699, not only it has a unique potentiality but also has acceptable specs over its price. If you’re eyeing a phone with unique abilities like a contactless thermometer, this phone is the best fit for you. You shouldn’t expect the phone to be powerful but yes as other phones–like rigid phones for hardcore activities, phones with productivity-focused performance–this smartphone from Umidigi can really be separated from other phones, and it’s very useful in this new normal.

  1. Its available at lazada too, last time I checked. Umidigi is still an obscure brand compared to its domestic rivals.
