According to a report from Guardian, TikTok has been removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store in the US just before a federal ban was set to take effect.
This means that the short-form video hosting app is no longer working for users in America, cutting off service to its millions of U.S. users.
Last week, we shared that the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, requires ByteDance (owner of TikTok), to sell its U.S. operations by January 19 to a non-Chinese buyer or face a nationwide ban.
However, TikTok chose not to sell, leading to the app’s removal.
President Biden, who signed the law in April 2024, has said the enforcement will fall to Trump, who will take office on Monday.
Now, according to NBC News, Trump has indicated that he will likely grant a 90-day extension before any ban is enforced.
While the law allows for a 90-day extension under specific conditions, the current deadline for compliance is Sunday, which might still result in briefly shutting down, as the app would become obsolete without regular updates.
Trump stated he would decide on this extension by Monday. What do you think about TikTok’s removal?
