Aside from the news of TikTok being banned in the US last night, CapCut, a video editing application, has also been banned as they are under the same company, ByteDance.
USA sees ByteDance as a national security threat. Because of this, TikTok, CapCut, and its other platforms were given a choice, sell their platform to a US company or get banned in the country.
This also means CapCut will be illegal for internet hosting services and app stores. While the applications might still be visible on some users’ smartphones, they will no longer be available for download.
This isn’t the first time TikTok has faced a ban in a country. Back in 2020, TikTok was also banned in India.
Moreover, in 2023, the National Security Council’s Assistant Director General, Jonathan Malaya, stated that a potential nationwide ban on TikTok was being considered if it was proven to be involved in cyber espionage.
TikTok’s impact on national security has raised concerns, emphasizing the need to evaluate potential threats posed by the app, especially its features that could compromise user data and jeopardize national security.
Now, aside from the US and India, Canada has also taken steps to ban TikTok in the past.
