The Odyssey OLED G8 is the first of Samsung’s gaming monitors to include a QD-OLED display, and it was unveiled for the first time at IFA 2022 in August. The 34-inch screen may be preordered via Samsung’s website and select shops starting today for $1,499.
After seeing the 2021 Alienware QD-OLED gaming monitor, we may expect an increase in color saturation and brightness.
Samsung’s 3440 x 1440, 175Hz, 1800R screen features a modest curvature. True Black 400 offers 400 nits of peak brightness. As my former colleague Cameron Faulkner writes, TV reviewer HDTVTest found that Alienware’s monitor could only attain 280 nits on an all-white screen, so the Odyssey OLED G8 may have a similar issue.
It plays games without a console or PC and has excellent specifications. Samsung’s Gaming Hub lets you play Nvidia’s GeForce Now and Xbox Game Pass from the display. The hub broadcasts Netflix, YouTube TV, and more.
The SmartThings app, Mini DisplayPort, HDMI, USB-C, and Core Lighting Plus light the wall behind the monitor with screen colors.
If this 34-inch display isn’t big enough, you’re lucky. Samsung will sell an OLED-equipped 49-inch Odyssey G9 gaming panel “later this year.”
