Microsoft Word has been around for years and provides us with tools to help us with our grammar and spelling with its built-in dictionary. You may see it whenever a squiggly or zig-zag line underneath a sentence or a word to notify you if it was misspelled or wrongly used in a sentence. However, Microsoft Word may sometimes not keep up with the words that are used today that are right or now universally used. Fortunately, MS Word has a tool for you to update its dictionary manually, and here’s how to create a custom word dictionary.
Step 1: Open Microsoft Word.
Step 2: At the top-left corner of the Microsoft Office Ribbon, click on the File tab.
Step 3: Scroll to the bottom of the File menu and click on More Options to reveal a collapsed menu.
Step 5: Click Options from the menu.
Step 6: On the left of the Word Options pop-up, click the Proofing tab.
Step 7: Scroll down the proofing menu to ‘When correcting spelling in Microsoft Office programs.’
Step 8: Click on Custom Dictionaries to launch the Custom Dictionaries dialog box.
Step 9: Check that Word has automatically ticked the All Languages check box. If not, check those boxes.
Step 10: Click the New button to launch the Create Custom Dictionary File Explorer showing the location of your other Word dictionaries.
Step 11: Type a name for your new Word dictionary in the File name box.
Step 12: Click Save to close the File Explorer.
The newly created dictionary will appear under Custom Dictionaries.
Step 13: To apply your new dictionary to your Microsoft Word, tick the box beside the name.
Step 14: Click OK to close the Custom Dictionaries dialog box.
Of Course, there are some words you would prefer not to be replaced based on your custom dictionary or just wanted a word from the custom dictionary deleted or at least make inactive in the meantime. Navigate to more options by clicking file then proceed to Proof to Head back to “Custom dictionaries”. To disable it temporarily, you can simply uncheck your custom dictionary or if you want to remove it, highlight your custom dictionary file and click remove.
