Not to throw shade at Apple but if Huawei continues to provide consumers with great alternatives to Macbooks, the Cupertino-giant needs to do so much better. At $999 or Php52,000, the newly announced Matebook 13 lets you have an updated Intel quad-core CPU, a large & accurate display in a lightweight chassis.
Huawei took the chance at CES 2019 to unveil the latest MacBook Air competitor featuring a 13-inch IPS 1440p display capable of 100% sRGB and 300 nits. It has an 88% screen-to-body ratio as opposed to the 82% on the Apple variant.
In case you’re wondering, the Matebook 13 seems to be the generational upgrade to the Matebook X and an affordable version of the Matebook X Pro. Aside from the display, it comes with the latest Core i5-8265U for the base model together with 8GB LPDDR3 RAM and 256GB PCIe SSD storage. While the top model will feature a Core i7-8565U, 512GB PCIe SSD, and a dedicated NVIDIA MX150 rated at 25W.
With a 41.7Wh battery in tow, the company claims 10 hours of video playback on the base model and 9 hours for the top variant.
Port selection is somewhat ok with two USB Type-C ports — one capable of power and data pass with the other for data and display. The laptop charges thru its 65W power adapter but also capable of 18W charging over Type-C. Although we’re unsure if this will hit retail stores but the model comes with a MateDock 2 out of the box for converting USB Type-C to Type-A and DVI.
The Matebook 13 features an all-aluminum build with a dimension of 286 x 211 x 15.0 mm while weighing 1.27kg. Two colors will be available: Mystic Silver (i5 model) and Space Grey (i7 model).
Huawei didn’t reveal when it’ll hit the shelves but pricing for the top model is at $1299 or Php68,000 before taxes.
