Huawei’s Mate 50 series was reintroduced after a two-year break. Like its predecessors, the phone symbolizes the company’s top-end portfolio and features the much-anticipated Mate 50 RS Porsche Edition. Given that the phone has a number of improvements over its predecessor, such as the newest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 engine, 64MP telephoto cameras, and a bigger battery, it’s time to see how these two phones compare.

On both smartphones, the general form factor is the same. This is hardly unexpected given that their screens are the same size. Individual measurements show little variation, with the Mate 50 Pro being somewhat slimmer despite the greater battery capacity. The Mate 50 Pro measures 162.1 x 75.5 x 8.5 mm, while the Mate 40 Pro measures 162.9 x 75.5 x 9.1 mm. The new Mate 50 Pro is significantly lighter, weighing 205 grams as opposed to 212 grams for the Mate 40 Pro. Both gadgets include a circular camera module with curved corners on the back, which makes them easy to grasp. However, the module designs differ, with the Mate 50 Pro’s camera housing having a metallic finish and the Mate 40 Pro’s being entirely black. As we move further, the differences between the two models become increasingly apparent. The Huawei Mate 50 Pro features a water drop notch with 3D facial recognition. The Mate 40 Pro, on the other hand, has a dual-camera punch-hole display. Both phones are water and dust resistant to IP68 standards.
Despite their differences, both devices are attractive smartphones with new color possibilities. The new Mate 50 Pro comes in four color schemes: black, silver, orange, and purple, whereas the Mate 40 Pro was available in Mystic Silver, black, green, white, and yellow.
When it comes to their screens, both phones boast high-quality panels. The new Mate 50 Pro features a 6.74-inch 1212 x 2616 pixel OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz. The Mate 40 Pro, on the other hand, featured a 6.76-inch screen with a 1344 x 2772 pixel resolution but a refresh rate of 90Hz. Having said that, both screens are outstanding, with superb visibility and colors. The new Huawei Kunlun Glass protection on the front of the Mate 50 Pro is a significant distinction between the two versions.
The cameras on the new model have also been significantly improved. The Mate 50 Pro features a 50MP Sony IMX766 primary camera with OIS, a 13MP ultra-wide shooter, and a third OIS-enabled 64MP periscope telephoto camera with 3.5X optical magnification. The Mate 40 Pro, on the other hand, has a 50MP primary sensor, a 12MP periscope telephoto camera with 5X optical zoom, and a 20MP ultra-wide shooter. It’s worth noting that the older Mate 40 Pro model included Leica optimizations, which the new model does not. Both phones have a 13MP selfie camera on the front as well as a TOF 3D sensor for Face Recognition.
One of the most noticeable changes between the two versions is their CPUs. The new Mate 50 Pro has a snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset running at 3.2GHz, whereas the previous Mate 50 Pro used a self-developed Huawei Kirin 9000 5G CPU. Because of the current restrictions against Huawei, the Mate 50 Pro is still unable to access 5G networks and is confined to a 4G LTE connection. Clearly, the new Snapdragon chip makes it far more powerful and efficient than the earlier model’s Kirin chip. Both phones have a maximum of 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. However, you may update storage by utilizing the nano memory slot, which is shared with the SIM card port. The Mate 50 Pro ships with the updated EMUI 13 operating system in the rest of the world and HarmonyOS 3.0 in China. The Mate 40 Pro, on the other hand, runs the EMUI 11 OS, which is based on Android 10.
The Mate 50 Pro has a bigger 4700mAh battery than the Mate 40 Pro, which has 4400mAh. They both offer 66W fast charging, 50W wireless charging, and 5W reverse wireless charging, though.
The Huawei Mate 50 Pro is available in a variety of configurations, including 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage and 8 GB RAM + 512 GB storage. The 256GB ROM variation costs Php58,999 while the 512GB model costs Php68,999.
The Huawei Mate 40 Pro, on the other hand, was introduced globally at €1199 for its 8GB RAM and 256GB model. However, it is available for less than $1000 on Amazon and other stores.
