This tutorial will show you how to install Microsoft Office for iPad and utilize Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on your tablet.
Installing Microsoft Office on an iPad
Download Microsoft Office as a whole, but you can also download individual apps like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and others as independent packages. Here’s how to get the Office all-in-one app on your iPad.
- Search for Microsoft Office in the App Store and download the Microsoft Office 365 app. To download and install the app, tap Get.
- When it has completed downloading and installing, press the Open button.
- You’ll be prompted to sign in to your Microsoft account (or create one), and you may be asked to grant the Office app some permissions. Make sure to read them so you know what you’re agreeing to.

How to Operate Microsoft Office for iPad
The Microsoft Office app for iPad has a few advantages:
- It takes up less space than the three separate programs covered by the Office app.
- There are a few extra features that you won’t find in standalone applications.
- It is possible to dictate directly to Microsoft Office from the iPad Voice Recorder.
If you want to use the all-in-one Microsoft Office app on your iPad instead of the individual programs, there are a few things you should know.
The Microsoft Office Home Screen
From the Home screen, you may select Recommended files, which are files you’ve recently opened, or press the New icon (the plus symbol) in the lower center of the screen to select the sort of new document you want to create.
The alternatives are as follows:
- Notes: Allows you to create a new note (Sticky Note) that you may store or share with others.
- Lens: Opens the camera to scan (or photograph) a document, photo, or whiteboard, which you may save as a Word document, PDF file, or image and share with others.
- Documents: Opens a window where you may select Scan text, Blank document, or Create from template for Word, Excel, or Powerpoint.
On the Home screen, there is also an Actions icon. You’ll discover choices like Transfer Files, Image To Text, and Image To Table here. The last two choices enable you to scan an image or document and convert any text included inside that scan to electronic text.
The ability to work with PDF files is another highly helpful feature of Office software. Using the Actions option, you may sign or scan PDFs and convert documents to PDFs.
Engaging in Work with Documents, Spreadsheets, and Presentations
When you open or create a new document, spreadsheet, or presentation, you’ll see that you have many of the same options as if you were using the standalone versions of these programs.
Documents
When dealing with documents, you’ll see that your formatting menus are where you’d expect them to be. And the menu may be moved to the right or left to display more possibilities. A huge microphone icon floats on the right side of the paper as well. Instead of typing using the onscreen keyboard, tap it to dictate what you want to write.
Tip: If you have access to these programs, the Apple keyboard and mouse will operate with them. If not, you can do whatever you want with finger gestures and the onscreen keyboard.
Spreadsheets
You move through a workbook or sheet in spreadsheets the same way you would in Microsoft Excel. You may also use the onscreen or wireless keyboard to enter data. When you choose a column or row, context menus will appear.
You can also use the shortening, formatting, and formula tools that you would find in the individual Microsoft Excel app.
Presentations
Using Presentation with the Office app for iOS is quite similar to using PowerPoint. You may design a presentation from scratch or from a template. You also have access to the same formatting tools as in the standalone PowerPoint client. You may add Notes and Comments, as well as automate your presentation.
The iPad’s Top Menu in Microsoft Office
There is one more menu you should become acquainted with. It’s the menu at the top of each app—Documents, Spreadsheets, and Presentation. This menu is largely the same across all three applications. Available are possibilities there for:
- Undo: This allows you to undo any changes you’ve made to the document.
- Text formatting: Text formatting choices such as fonts, size, formats, spacing, and alignment are available.
- Search: Executes a search or search and replace operation.
- Share: Allows you to invite others to collaborate on the document by sending them a link via email or messaging.
- More: This menu includes options for saving, printing, exporting, and viewing history.
On a document, you’ll also see a Mobile View option. This allows you to see how your document will look on a mobile device. Tap the pen symbol to activate Ink annotations on a presentation.
