On October 6, Google revealed the new Pixel 7 series during one of its largest product events of 2022, Made by Google. As a consequence, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are two extremely competitive smartphones on the market. Both appear to be extremely attractive on paper and are priced a few hundred dollars apart. One of the most notable features of the two phones is that they are powered by the second-generation Tensor G2 CPU, which is an advance over last year’s Tensor chip. Notably, they will have a lengthy software maintenance cycle, with Google pledging at least three operating system upgrades and five years of security fixes.

While the two phones appear to be identical, their dimensions and display sizes differ somewhat. The Pro will, of course, have a larger footprint than the normal Pixel 7, which focuses on a more compact form factor. Even the cameras and battery capacity differ significantly between the two phones, so we decided to compare the Pixel 7 versus the Pixel 7 Pro today.

Let’s look at how these models differ and how they are similar in several aspects.

Design

The Pixel 7 series offers no notable improvements over its predecessor. As a result, the horizontal camera bar on the back is the same as on the Pixel 6 series. However, there are a few improvements to this bar design, such as the fact that it is now constructed of aluminum and bends into the sides. Notably, the Pixel 7’s camera bar at the back sports a matte finish as opposed to the glossy one on the 7 Pro. The back is comprised of Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus, which provides excellent durability.

Overall, the Pixel 7 series appears more polished and sophisticated this year, and with up to three color options, you won’t be dissatisfied with its appearance. The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are available in two colors: Obsidian and Snow. However, the Lemongrass (Pixel 7) and Hazel (Pixel 7 Pro) are model-specific. They are also dust and water-resistant (IP68).

When it comes to specific proportions, the Pixel 7 is significantly smaller than its Pro sister. The dimensions are 155.6 x 73.2 x 8.7mm against 162.9 x 76.6 x 8.9 mm for the Pro model. As a result, the Pixel 7 Pro is both taller and broader than the basic model, making it unsuitable for one-handed operation. The regular model is also lighter, weighing 197 grams vs 212 grams for the Pro model.

The Pixel 7 is clearly aimed at customers who prefer a more compact experience, whilst the Pixel 7 Pro offers the benefit of a considerably bigger display.

Display

The screens on the two phones are also different. The Pixel 7 has a smaller 6.4-inch OLED display with Full HD+ resolution and a refresh rate of 90Hz. The Pixel 7 Pro, on the other hand, has a larger 6.7-inch pOLEd display with QHD+ resolution and a higher 120Hz refresh rate. Another significant distinction is the appearance of their screens. The Pixel 7 has a flat display, but the Pixel 7 Pro has a curved edge panel on the front. There’s also a minor variation in peak display brightness, with the Pixel 7 Pro reaching 1500 nits and the Pixel 7 hitting 1400 nits.

Camera

The Pixel 7 boasts a dual-camera arrangement, with the Pro version adding a third 48MP telephoto lens at the rear.

The Pixel 7 has a 50MP primary camera as well as a 12MP ultra-wide sensor. The Pixel 7 Pro, on the other hand, boasts a 50MP primary camera, a 12MP ultra-wide shooter, and a 48MP camera with up to 5X optical zoom. Both phones can record 4K videos at 60 frames per second.

On both devices, the front camera has a 10.8MP sensor for selfies and video calls.

Specs & Performance

The two phones are extremely similar in terms of hardware. They both have the latest Google Tensor G2 processor inside the Titan M2, which provides equal performance. The Tensor G2 features two Cortex-X1 cores, two Cortex-A78 cores, and four Cortex-A55 cores. It’s not the fastest processor on the market, but it’s powerful enough to tackle demanding tasks.

The Pixel 7 Pro has a maximum RAM configuration of 12GB, whereas the Pixel 7 only has an 8GB RAM option. The Pixel 7’s UFS 3.1 storage expands to 256GB, while the Pixel 7 Pro goes one step further with 512GB of ROM.

It should come as no surprise that both devices run the most recent stock Android 13 version. Google has pledged at least three OS upgrades and five years of security patches for both devices, ensuring that these phones, like their predecessors, will last a very long time.

Battery

The Pixel 7 has a smaller 4335mAh battery that supports 30W fast charging and 15W wireless charging. The Pixel 7 Pro, on the other hand, has a bigger 5000mAh battery with the same charging rates for both wired and wireless charging as the ordinary model.

It’s worth noting that Google does not provide a charger in most locations.

Price, Availability & Conclusion

In the United States, the Pixel 7 costs $599 (roughly Php35,255), while the Pixel 7 Pro costs $899 (around Php52,911). However, there are pre-order specials on both devices in a variety of locations, which should reduce the price at the time of purchase.

The Pixel 7 appears to be an excellent choice if you want a tiny gadget with a good combination of cameras and processing power. However, if you want more camera functions, it may be worth it to upgrade to the Pro version for a few hundred dollars extra.
