The Google Pixel 7 series was unveiled in early October, and the phones have begun to arrive worldwide. The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro models are gaining popularity as a result of strong launch day deals. However, before you decide to purchase the new Pixel gadgets, you should consider how they compare to their predecessors.

In this post, we’ll compare the Pixel 7 and Pixel 6 and discover how they’re similar and distinct in a variety of ways. The new second-generation Google Tensor G2 processor, which improves on last year’s Tensor chip, is one of the most significant changes on the Pixel 7. There are variations in size as well as camera departments, so let’s see how the new model compares to last year’s Pixel 6.

Design

The Pixel 7 series doesn’t bring any significant upgrades over its predecessor. So you get the same horizontal camera bar at the back as the Pixel 6 series. One change that you’ll notice is that the rear camera housing is now made of aluminum and curves on the side.

Despite the small differences from its predecessor, the Pixel 7 appears to be a touch more premium this year. The polished metal gives it a more premium appearance, something the Pixel 6 lacked. The new model comes in three colors: Snow, Obsidian, and Lemongrass. The Pixel 6 on the other hand, has a slew of nicer color options, including pastels like Kinda Coral and Sorta Seafoam. It’s worth noting that both phones are IP68 dust and water-resistant.

In terms of size, the Pixel 7 is somewhat smaller than its predecessor. The Pixel 6 model measures 155.6 x 73.2 x 8.7mm, whereas the Pixel 6 model measures 158.6 x 74.8 x 8.9mm. Even in terms of weight, the Pixel 7 is a few grams less than the Pixel 6, at 197 grams against 207 grams. Despite the small differences, the Pixel 7 appears to be more attractive than last year’s Pixel 6.

Display

The screens on the two phones also differ somewhat. The Pixel 7 has a smaller 6.3-inch OLED display with Full HD+ resolution and a refresh rate of 90Hz. The Pixel 6, on the other hand, features a 6.4-inch display with a refresh rate of 90Hz. Notably, the Pixel 7 is touted to be 25% brighter than the Pixel 6 in direct sunshine. While the Pixel 7’s total peak brightness of 1400 nits is slightly lower than that of the Pixel 7 Pro, it is still much brighter than the Pixel 6 model. Another feature that the Pixel 7 has that the Pixel 6 does not is Face Unlock.

Camera

The Pixel 7’s camera module is identical to that of its preceding model, with a dual-camera arrangement. The Pixel 7 is equipped with a 50MP primary camera and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor. For selfies and video calls, there’s a 10.8MP f/2.2 sensor camera module on the front. On paper, the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 have identical rear camera modules, but the front camera is somewhat poorer. It has an 8MP sensor with an aperture of f/2.0. While the camera specifications appear to be comparable, the true difference is in the CPU. The Pixel 7 can take numerous photographs from its primary and wide-angle cameras to ensure blur-free photos thanks to the Tensor G2 processor. With quicker Night Sight, low-light performance is also improved. Another significant advancement in the camera sector is audio-guided prompts for getting great selfies for persons with low eyesight.

Despite having equal camera specifications, the Pixel 7’s camera performance will be superior to the Pixel 6.

Specs & Performance

The Pixel 7 features the newest Tensor G2 chipset with Titan M2, which outperforms the previous year’s processor. The new G2 processor contains two Cortex-X1 cores, two Cortex-A78 cores, and four Cortex-A55 cores. The processor is powerful enough to handle any work thrown at it, but the main draw of this new chipset is its capacity to handle AI and ML. In comparison, the Pixel 6 was equipped with a first-generation Google Tensor processor, which is expected to be significantly inferior to the newest model. In terms of RAM capacity, both Pixel smartphones have a single 8GB RAM option. Both variants include either 128GB or 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage onboard.

In terms of software, both devices run the most recent Android 13 stock version. Google has pledged at least three OS upgrades and five years of security patches for both smartphones, however, the Pixel 6 will receive one less Android upgrade than the Pixel 7.

Battery

The Pixel 7 has a smaller 4335mAh battery that supports 30W fast charging and 15W wireless charging. The Pixel 6 has a bigger 4614mAh battery on board, however, charging was restricted to 21W. Despite the reduced battery life, Google claims that the Pixel 7 can survive a whole day and up to 72 hours in Extreme Battery Saver mode. However, it is worth noting that securing the quickest charging support of 30W may cost you a few more dollars, as Google does not supply a charger in most locations.

Price & Conclusion

The Pixel 7 begins at $599 (roughly Php35,255). The phone is priced at $399 (around Php23,389) price in the US. Notably, the Pixel 6 was not released in India, and only the less expensive Pixel 6a was made available.

Unless you are purchasing the Pixel 6 at a steep discount, it makes perfect sense to upgrade to the new Pixel 7, which has superior processing power, additional photography functions, and even a longer support cycle.
