Ivan John Uy, Secretary of the Department of Information and Communications Technology, said they also want to improve the skills of young Filipinos “to answer the needs of our employers.”

The DICT said there are about 3 million job openings in the cybersecurity sector, so the agencies plan to train Filipinos to fill at least 500,000 of those positions.

The DICT secretary said, “And all of these countries are looking at sourcing those talents, and the Philippines is one of the first areas that they look” because, according to them, Filipinos are great hackers.

He also said that “the sky is the limit” because there are many open jobs in other countries. Uy said the government needs to build interest and talent” to attract more employers.

Uy pointed out that there are only 200 certified cybersecurity experts in the Philippines, and 70% of them work abroad.

The government plans to offer scholarships and work with private groups to get more Filipinos interested in this field.
