Samsung‘s upcoming Galaxy S25 phones will exclusively feature Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor, according to industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
This decision comes amid reported challenges for Samsung with its own Exynos 2500 chip due to production issues related to their advanced 3nm technology. Kuo also highlighted that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chips will carry a 25-30% higher price tag, potentially boosting Qualcomm’s earnings from increased chip orders by Samsung.
Historically, Samsung has heavily relied on its own Exynos processors for its flagship Galaxy S series, with around 60% of last year’s Galaxy S24 models powered by the Exynos 2400 chip. However, recent reports indicate that Samsung is grappling with low yield rates of approximately 20% for its second-generation 3nm chips.
This poses a significant challenge as Samsung aims to decrease dependence on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), especially amidst rising costs for advanced chips. The production hurdles raise concerns about Samsung’s ability to manage costs effectively for the upcoming Galaxy S25 series.
Adding to the anticipation, Qualcomm has announced its plans to host the Snapdragon Summit 2024 event from October 21-23, 2024, in Maui, Hawaii.
This event is expected to unveil the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, featuring Qualcomm’s new custom Oryon CPU cores, previously introduced in their flagship ARM chip, the Snapdragon X Elite. Recent unveilings such as the Galaxy Book 4 Edge underscore Qualcomm’s ongoing innovations in processor technology, aligning with the high expectations for the Galaxy S25 series.
