HDMI Forum, which develops and manages the HDMI Specification, has unveiled the specs of the latest HDMI 2.2.

The HDMI 2.2 supports up to 96Gbps bandwidth, which is a lot faster than its predecessor at 48Gbps. It will also apply to devices supporting 64Gbps, 80Gbps, and the full 96Gbps bandwidth.
The version 2.2 incorporates the latest Fixed Rate Link (FRL) technology to deliver more efficient video and audio transmission across supported devices. Additionally, a Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) has also been added to help reduce sync issues when multiple devices are connected.
It also supports higher video resolution and frame rates, including uncompressed formats of 8K at 60Hz and 4K at 240Hz with full 4:4:4 chroma at 10- and 12-bit depth.
Other supported video formats and frame rates include: 4K at 480Hz, 5K at 240Hz, 8K at 240Hz, 10K at 120Hz, 12K at 120Hz, and 16K at 60Hz.

The company has also announced a new standard for the cables that contain the Ultra96 label, which comply with HDMI 2.2 and support bandwidths of 64, 80, or 96 Gbps. This means a cable must have the Ultra96 label to achieve the said bandwidths and all HDMI 2.2 features.
The label can be scanned and verified to ensure that buyers are getting a certified product. The Ultra96 cable will succeed the Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable, which supports up to 48 Gbps. Testing for each model length will be required by the company to guarantee compliance, and the label is required to be displayed on the cable itself.

Other specs of the HDMI 2.2 include dynamic HDR support, source-based tone mapping (SBTM), enhanced eARC, enhanced gaming features, including VRR, ALLM, and QFT, Quick Media Switching (QMS), and HDMI cable power.
