MOONTON Sues Tencent

You may remember that Riot Games filed a lawsuit against MOONTON in the US back in May because Mobile Legends: Bang Bang was said to be similar to League of Legends: Wild Rift. In 2018, Riot Games’ parent company, Tencent Holdings, won a $2.9 million lawsuit against Moonton Technology CEO Xu Zhenhua in China. However, Moonton Technology then sued Riot Games for commercial slander.

MOONTON said that since Mobile Legends: Bang Bang came out in June 2016, it has become more prevalent in Southeast Asia than the Honor of Kings Tencent made. MOONTON filed a complaint against Tencent in 2019 for unfair competition, saying that Tencent made up and spread false information about how Mobile Legends: Bang Bang copied League of Legends: Wild Rift and Honor of Kings.

After many years, the final trial showed that Tencent committed commercial slander, and the Shanghai Intellectual Property Court ordered the company to pay MOONTON ¥220,000 (around ₱1.8 million) as compensation.

After receiving the compensation in its filing against Tencent, MOONTOON released a statement:

“The company had fabricated and spread false information inconsistent with the facts and hindered the cooperation between the plaintiff and relevant partners. This behavior caused serious damage to MOONTON Game’s business reputation and should bear legal responsibility,”
