Two months from now, Apple will be hosting yet another WWDC, which will feature a lot of new Apple products. On top of the list are the new iOS17 and iPadOS 17 updates packed with cool new features. However, reports state that older Apple devices will no longer be supported by the new OS updates.
The rumor claims several Apple devices will not receive iOS17 and iPadOS 17. This includes:
A relevant theory suggests that the “unpatchable vulnerability” from the iPhone 4s to iPhone X models would provide permanent jailbreak. Also, keep in mind, these devices still has older chipsets like A5 to A11 chips. This is all according to MacRumors.
According to Apple’s update policy, users can expect support for five to seven years worth of update of software updates.
This is not new for mobile phones, both Android and iOS users. Every year, new updates for their respective operating systems are released. Expect a handful of old mobile devices will not be included in the update. We can look back from last year’s iOS 16 update, which ultimately dropped updated support for iPhone 7/Plus, iPhone 6s/Plus, 1st-gen iPhone SE, and the 7th-gen iPod Touch.
However, Apple will continue to provide security patches despite its cessation of support.
Note, certain features can not be carried throughout all devices. Apple’s new OS features will be only for newer devices. This means that even if your Apple device meets the criteria for compatibility with the iOS 17/iPadOS 17, some features will not apply to your device.
For more details with the latest iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, we just have to wait for Apple’s WWDC 2023 this June.
