Are you familiar with the Better Internet Act that was passed in 2020? A minimum download speed was mandated to provide better internet connectivity. Despite its potential, the bill got bogged down in the legislative process and did not make law. However, the bill’s author, Senator Grace Poe, is steadfast in her determination and has refiled the bill.

In the incoming 19th Congress, the bill is known as Senate Bill No. 329. Still, it remains the same in its purpose to provide Filipinos with fast, reliable, and affordable access to the internet.

To comply with the bill, Globe, DITO, and Smart must extend their coverage to remote and isolated areas. In addition, they will be required to ensure that their internet speeds meet minimum standards.

Should public telecommunication entities or internet service providers fail to meet the minimum internet speeds imposed under the bill, they will be fined ₱200,000. Meanwhile, there is no speed requirement for free internet services.

Poe believes the internet is vital to “survive and thrive.” In a recent announcement, the DICT promised to provide access to the internet for those living in remote areas.
