Google Maps is receiving a major update that adds new AI-powered features and redesigned navigation tools.
One of the new features is Ask Maps, a conversational tool that lets users ask questions about places directly within the app. The feature uses AI from Google Gemini to analyze location data and provide answers.

Instead of searching through multiple listings or reviews, users can ask questions instead. The system then suggests locations on the map and provides relevant details.
The tool can also help with travel planning. For example, users can request recommended stops along a route and receive suggested locations with directions, estimated travel times, and community review tips.

According to Google, the results are personalized based on factors such as saved places and past searches.
Users can then take actions directly from the results, including saving locations, sharing them, or navigating to them.
Google is also introducing Immersive Navigation, the largest redesign of the navigation experience in more than a decade. The update introduces a more detailed 3D map view, displaying buildings, terrain, and road structures.

The navigation interface can highlight important road elements such as lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs to help drivers prepare for turns and merges.
Additional updates include a wider route preview, more natural voice directions, and clearer guidance for exits and lane changes. The system can also show tradeoffs between alternate routes, such as a longer drive with less traffic or a faster route with tolls.

Drivers will also receive alerts for disruptions such as crashes or road construction based on reports from the Maps user community.

The update also improves the final part of a trip by showing building entrances, nearby parking, and which side of the street a destination is located.
As for the availability, Ask Maps is rolling out first in the United States and India on Android and iOS devices. Desktop support is expected later.
While Immersive Navigation is starting to roll out in the United States and will expand to supported Android and iOS devices, along with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and vehicles with Google built-in, in the coming months.
