The common charger directive, which makes USB-C the standard charging cord throughout the EU, was accepted by members of the European Council. Before being published in the Official Journal of the European Union, which will make it effective in 24 months, the law requires the signatures of the presidents of the European Parliament and the Council.

The standard charger directive, which has been in the works for ten years, aims to cut down on electrical waste. Tablets, digital cameras, headphones, handheld game consoles, and most other tiny gadgets will all use USB-C as their primary charging port in addition to phones. In 2026, laptops will also need to use cable.

Except for Apple, which has been testing the universal plug in place of its Lighting port for its iPhones, most phones charge via USB-C.
