Chinese automaker BYD has become the world’s top provider of electric vehicles, overtaking Tesla.
According to BYD, the company has sold 641,350 new vehicles, an increase of 314.9% from the first half of last year (2021). The majority of electric cars 323,519 are battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), while plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) comprise the rest.Â
The Chinese government considers battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to be new energy vehicles (NEVs).
A lockdown in China disrupted the production of main rival Tesla in the second quarter of 2022, causing the company to deliver 564,743 vehicles in the first half of 2022.
The company is also the world’s second-largest manufacturer of high-voltage batteries, surpassing South Korea’s LG. Chinese government policies encouraged investments in clean energy when the company succeeded.
Despite these impressive sales, BYD currently sells most of its products in China. This will likely change soon since the company is expanding aggressively in other countries.
BYD’s first vehicle rolled off the assembly line at its new factory in Hefei on the 30th of June, making it BYD’s sixth factory in China to manufacture automobiles. This base produces the Qin Plus DM-i model at present. BYD’s production capacity is expected to be further enhanced by this base in the year’s second half.
