Since pioneering the laptop industry, Toshiba, the Japan multinational conglomerate company, is now closing its PC business. 35 years after the introduction of the first mainstream laptop in the market, the company has now quietly sold its remaining Dynabook brand stake to Sharp. As pointed out by Engadget, about 80.1% was already sold to Sharp back in 2018. While the Dynabook lineup will live on, the signs of Toshiba are no more.Â
Toshiba was a well-known brand between the 90s and 2000s, all thanks to Satellite, Portégé, and Qosmio Series. It’s also one of the few companies that offered media-centric portable machines until Blu-ray became a thing. After that, it appeared to be that the company failed to match what Apple and Dell offered — the popular MacBook Air and XPS Series. As more and more people became on-the-go, Toshiba wasn’t able to keep up with the trend of lightweight and powerful.Â
All eyes are on Sharp, as the company tries to keep Dynabook competitive in the heated battle for portables.
