Samsung Reportedly to Supply Larger OLED Screen for New Nintendo Switch

It looks like Samsung and Nintendo are partnering up. It has been reported by Bloomberg that Samsung would supply a 7-inch panel for a new Switch gaming console.

In the report, Samsung Display Co. would provide new OLED panels for the upcoming Nintendo Switch refresh model which would be featuring a larger screen (the current model has a 6.2-inch, 16:9 720p display while Switch Lite has a 5.5-inch screen). Also, Samsung would start production with the panels in June with an initial target of producing one million units per month. It is expected that by July shipments would roll out to the assemblers.

However, the 720p resolution will still remain due to reasonable reasons. One reason is to have a consistent HD experience when the console is docked and undocked between console variants. Another reason is to avoid the console from overheating especially when it is on handheld mode.

According to the reports, this would be a rigid OLED panel. It is also a cheaper alternative compared to the flexible panels placed on higher-end smartphones. Also, a 4K mode would be added in the new Switch however there is still no confirmation from the gaming console company.
