Sen. Grace Poe said yesterday that the required SIM card registration should not be put on hold because of bugs that let fake ID cards get through. She also told telecommunication companies to do their part in following the law.
Reports said that the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) was able to use Bart Simpson’s picture on an ID to register a SIM card.
In front of the Senate Public Services Committee, the National Bureau of Investigation also showed that a SIM card could be registered with a picture of a monkey on it.
PAOCC Undersecretary Gilbert Cruz announced that the SIM card registration should be stopped because of these problems.
Senator Poe, who wrote the law on SIM card registration, said the problem is not with the law itself but with how it is being used.
She said that people should still be able to register SIM cards, but that companies should do a better job of making sure that people who register are real so that scammers don’t use SIM cards.
