March of last year, Samsung Display announced that it would be discontinuing LCD production by the end of 2020 which, however, never came to be.
Recently, reports in Korea are surfacing that Samsung Display is keeping producing LCD screens until the end of next year. One of the reasons the company decided to continue is the increase in the price of LCD panels which started June 2020 and is still going up to this day.
As requested by Samsung Electronics, the production and operation of Samsung Display were extended as it still wants to use its LCD panels. This would entail an increase in bargaining power with Chinese panel makers like BOE and CSOT. In general, Chinese companies offer low prices but can even decrease the price even lower. Samsung Electronics also shared that they also use LCDs from LG Display but prefer the ones coming from Samsung Display.
We can expect an announcement will be made by the company regarding its LCD production by the end of this month.
