Ever since Apple removed the headphone jack on the iPhone 7, more and more features that should be there in the first place are getting omitted. Thanks to 5G, we’re slowly seeing the microSD slot fading away in the background. Though it’s not as big of a deal as the headphone jack, it’s still an omitted feature some users value so much. Unfortunately last year, Apple had the courage (again) to remove an essential accessory of any smartphone — the charger.

The first manufacturer to follow Apple’s footsteps is Xiaomi, shipping the Mi 11 with no charger. However, the company said that it’s still giving away the charger in a separate box if the buyer’s asked for it, at least in China. After that, Samsung went ahead and launched the Galaxy S21 with a slimmer box because of — surprise — the lack of a charger. Given how expensive flagship phones are nowadays, you may think manufacturers only want you to spend more for less. How likely is this trend going to stop? Well, it’s not looking good.

As posted by Lu Weibing on Weibo, Xiaomi’s VP in China, the photo indicates a regular-sized box and a downsized one. It’s the packaging for the Redmi K40 phone, an upcoming flagship killer from the company, but probably with no charger in the box. Given this is Xiaomi we’re talking about, we could see Redmi doing the same thing with the Mi 11. But then again, we’re only looking at a teased photo that indicates nothing but two differently-sized boxes.
