A special edition of Redmi K30 just launched in China and introduces the first-ever Snapdragon 768G device on the market. Dubbed as the Redmi K30 5G Racing Edition, the phone has an official price of CNY 1999(~P14,100). While the rest of the specs are the same as the variant with Snapdragon 765G, a new color has been introduced just for the new handset which is the Mint Ice Blue. The Racing Edition will go on sale in China starting May 14.
As expected, it’s still the same 120Hz phone with 64MP quad-cameras and dual-selfie. However, it seems like there’s only one model — 6GB/128GB.
Now, for that Snapdragon 768G chipset. It’s an overclock model of the 765G making it the fastest mid-range Qualcomm SoC to date. Comparing the two, the base clock speed of 1.8GHz for the six efficient cores and the 2.2GHz of the middle-core stay but the high-performing core is bumped from 2.4GHz to 2.8GHz — offering up to 15% more performance together with the boosted Adreno 620 GPU. There are also no additional software enhancements for cameras, performance, or internet connectivity.Â
We’re not entirely sure why Qualcomm is releasing with an overclocked version of a mid-range chipset, however, this is a trend that started with the flagship Snapdragon series. By trickling it down to the lower segment, Qualcomm might be able to sell more chipsets to smartphone brands, these brands then might be able to sell more units quarterly, and most of the consumers might be enticed to pick the phones with the latest specs which we expect to come at higher price tags.
