Moto Razr 5G Announced: Now A Better Mid-Range Folding Phone for P68k

Nine months after the first Moto Razr launched globally, the company behind the nostalgic folding device is now back with the Moto Razr 5G. As you may have guessed from the moniker, it now carries 5G capability, along with overall better performance, cameras, design, and usability. All that for the suggested retail price of $1,399(~Php68,000), just about $100 less expensive than the predecessor. While it won’t blow your socks off when it comes to performance, you are paying for the luxury of having a folding device in the generation full of slabs. Nevertheless, here’s what’s new with the device.

Starting with the design, the second-gen Moto Razr features nearly the same look as its predecessor. However, we’re now looking at three colors: Polished Graphite with a glossy finish, Liquid Mercury that looks a lot like the old Razr from the early 2000s, and Blush Gold in satin. The glass comes with Gorilla Glass protection, with a stainless steel hinge that can withstand up to 200,00 flips. In the real world, that gives you 100 flips in a day for five years. Other than the looks, the fingerprint scanner is now located on the back, featuring the inscribed logo within it. Also, there’s now a SIM slot on the bottom as opposed to the eSIM on the first generation. There’s no headphone jack, though.

There are a few improvements when it comes to the software experience. You can now do a lot more with the smaller outer screen such as opening and using apps, albeit in a cramped manner. Combined with the Snapdragon 765G, animations and app loading times are faster all around. The chipset is paired with 8GB RAM and 256GB non-expandable storage. The 48MP f1.7 main camera carries some improvements as well, alongside OIS, laser autofocus, and up to 4K@30fps video. As for the 6.2″ pOLED screen inside, the crease is still there.

One of the biggest addition on the Razr 5G is 5G in sub-6Ghz, not mmWave. While it’s good to see a bit of futureproofing here, you will wonder how long the 2800mAh can support the next-gen wireless connection.

Lenovo Philippines previously teased the first Moto Razr; however, we did not see any product launch since then. With that in mind, it’s safe to say that the new Razr won’t debut as well. With the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5G available for purchase, Moto will have a tough time convincing buyers with its water-downed specs.
