President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. recently announced a significant step forward for the Philippines’ internet connectivity. An agreement between Astranis and Orbits will bring MicroGEO satellites, dedicated to enhancing internet access in remote areas.
Through this collaboration, the first two satellites tailored for the Philippines will be launched, aiming to serve unserved and underserved regions, promising a significant investment of US$400 million (PHP22 billion) over eight years.
These MicroGEO satellites have the potential to cover around 10 million users and reach 30,000 barangays, contributing to the creation of over 10,000 job opportunities.
At the unveiling, Philippine Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez revealed the name of the primary satellite as “Agila,” symbolizing the project’s commitment to advancing technology and fostering international connections.
Can this satellite initiative lead to a substantial improvement in internet accessibility across remote areas of the Philippines?
