Guide on Getting to Know Your Android Device

Choosing an android device can be a bit overwhelming yet gives a lot of freedom, compared to iPhones, there can be a lot of restrictions.

Setting up your new phone

To set it up, you must first turn the device on. You may skip setting up the mobile network or not depending if you have a SIM card ready to be inserted.

You could also start to connect to a WIFI network if there is one available.

If you have an older device that has your important files, newer devices offer cloning and you could copy your older device to the newer one. You can only use this feature if the device’s brand is identical most of the time. There is also an option where you can use Google drive to back up the files from your older device and transfer it to the newer one.

Once you retrieve your old files, you can now proceed to set the time and date and will be asked to agree to google services and the legal terms. Some devices will ask you to set up security by asking for a password, PIN, pattern, fingerprint, or face recognition, however, you could skip this step.

Now that you are on the home screen, you could check for software updates keeping your device secured from malware and bugs making its system more robust. To do so, you must tap “System”, look for “advanced”, then go to “System Update” and tap “Check for update”. If there is any available update, the device would download the update and install them.

Notification, gestures, and navigation buttons

Most android has 3 button navigation button at the bottom screen which consists of an Overview that would reveal all active applications on your device, arranged from the oldest to the most recent application you have opened. The second middle one is the home button. Tapping the home button will take you back to the home screen and holding the home button activates google assistant.

The back button will take you back from the previous thing you went on an app or the last page on your mobile browser. When you swipe down from the topmost screen downwards, A quick settings bar or notification shade would appear, revealing your notifications such as unread messages, applications updates, and even settings that can be turned on with just a tap. With this feature, turning on WIFI, Bluetooth, hotspot, increasing brightness, dismissing notifications, and even turning on airplane mode is easy without going to the main settings of your device.

What apps should I get?

Nowadays, android device applications are already pre-installed with applications that are widely known by their users such as Facebook, Instagram, Netflix, and Snapchat. But if you do not see the application that you are looking for, you could try looking at the google play store where most applications are there ready to be downloaded and installed. Since the androids operating system was developed by google, android devices can be integrated into the internet of things(IoT) which means it can be linked to your smart TVs, smart watches even to your car via android auto.

Keeping it up to date

Things to keep in mind when using an android phone are the operating system is an open platform, there will be some inconsistency. It is not as robust as an iPhone, however, such inconsistencies can be fixed by keeping your android device system updated. Another thing to keep in mind is, Despite the short battery life from the previous models and versions, companies are investing not only in cameras, but they are also in improving fast charging and system optimization for lesser power consumption to avoid wearing the batteries sooner than before.
