A recent survey by Telenor, an international telecommunications corporation based in Norway, found that Filipinos use their mobile phones for more hours per day than people in any other Asian country.

Some 73% of Filipinos and 51% of Indonesians said they spend at least 5 hours daily on their phones. On top of that, 70% of Filipino respondents say they use their phones for social media daily, making them the most active users worldwide.

The study has also revealed some surprising information, such as the effects people think mobile phones have on people nowadays. 93% of Filipinos polled agreed or strongly agreed that having a mobile phone enhance their quality of life by connecting with friends and family better, doing tasks more quickly, and staying abreast of current events.

Using a mobile device is say to strain relationships and impede an individual’s ability to communicate with others. “This analysis completely debunks that theory,” stated Jrgen Rostrup, CEO of Telenor Asia.

About a quarter of Filipino respondents (29%) indicated they never left home without their cell phones. Given this, it’s clear that having a mobile device within reach at all times is crucial.

The convenience of online banking and loan services has also contributed to the growth of mobile phone use. The vast majority of those polled (92%) believe that mobile technology has increased their availability to financial services, with 57% saying this is the case.

“As mobile connectivity becomes even more fundamental to our daily lives, lacking the right skills and awareness, including to navigate safety and privacy issues, or being off the grid can severely restrict access to education, healthcare, economic and employment opportunities. We need to better understand digital gaps, and how to bridge them, as well as the carbon footprint of our online habits, as we work together to create a future where mobile connectivity is empowering and sustainable for all,” Rostrup said.

The use of a mobile phone is now fundamental to functioning in the modern world.
