The European Union (EU) is getting serious about making sure Meta keeps kids safe on Facebook and Instagram. The Commission announced that it will conduct a thorough investigation into Facebook and Instagram because it believes they haven’t properly dealt with the risks to children.
The EU is worried that Meta‘s apps might be causing problems for kids’ well-being. They’re especially concerned about things like addiction to social media and kids seeing stuff they shouldn’t online.

Furthermore, there’s concern about children spending excessive time on Facebook and Instagram. It’s believed that these platforms might be fostering addiction by encouraging kids to scroll through posts continuously.
They’re also checking if Meta is doing enough to keep kids away from harmful content online. They want to ensure that the tools used to verify users’ ages are effective. Added to that is they want to make sure Meta’s settings and suggestions keep kids safe from harm.
Meta says they’ve made lots of tools to keep kids safe online, but EU isn’t sure if it’s enough.
As shared by Reuters, a spokesperson from Meta stated, “We want young people to have safe, age-appropriate experiences online and have spent a decade developing more than 50 tools and policies designed to protect them,”

The European Union is approaching this matter with utmost seriousness. They will gather additional evidence and determine the appropriate course of action.
