Soon, Filipino commuters will be able to use their credit and debit cards in public transportation, thanks to a project developed by the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
The AFCS stands for the Automated Fare Collection System, which could cost about Php4.5 billion. It is anticipated that the AFCS will launch in 2023.
National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) will notify DOTr Undersecretary Cesar Chavez to submit a feasibility study.
Chavez’s study is currently in its “final stages.” He expects to begin discussions with NEDA within three months.
Chavez is optimistic that Filipinos will be able to use credit cards on public transportation in one-and-a-half to two years.
In the AFCS, users can pay with credit or debit cards issued by Mastercard and Visa. Beep Card will also be supported, and other transport units will be added soon.
It will be used for buses, jeepneys, railways, and airfares. A government-owned system will conduct payments.
