The Philippines has ranked second when it comes to download speeds of 5G networks relative to 4G in the fourth quarter of 2020. This is according to Opensignal Ltd, a UK mobile analytics company.
In a given report on Wednesday, Opensignal stated that, “Emerging markets see some of the biggest jumps in mobile experience with 5G. In Thailand, our mobile users see 5G download speed 13.4 times faster than the 4G download speed — the greatest increase in the world — with the Philippines second with 10.1 times and Saudi Arabia third.”
Take note, the measure download speed Opensignal uses is the average speed using in an active 5G connection.
In the given data, the Philippines has the largest gain which accumulates 40% when it comes to the 5G video experience. Thailand comes second which has 29% better 5G video experience compared to 4G equivalent then was followed by Hong Kong that has 14%.

However, Fitch stated that when it comes to operating cash flow, there would be a significant “lag behind 5G investments, keeping free cash flow (FCF) constrained over the next three years.” Also, the near-term boost seems unlikely significant when it comes to 5G revenue and there is a lack of “compelling” applications that can differentiate from 5G to 4G.
PLDT, Inc. Chief Revenue Officer Alfredo S. Panlilio stated back in a briefing last October that they would be setting a bigger budget for 5G in 2021. Also, PLDT’s wireless partner, Smart Communications Inc., had already launched the 5G service last July 2020.
Globe Telecom, Inc. has already provided 5G services and is now covering 1,045 areas. They promised that they would expand more this year.
On the other hand, PLDT’s 5G network is currently covering areas such as Makati City, New Clark City in Pampanga, and the Araneta district in Quezon City.
