A couple of months ago, Qualcomm announced its most powerful processor yet called the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC. Now, the company has unveiled its successor, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 (SM8475) flagship Mobile Platform.
Qualcomm claims that the new chipset has a 10% higher CPU performance since the peak Cortex-X2 core is now clocked at 3.2GHz compared to the 3GHz of its predecessor.
The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 also promises a 30% improvement in power efficiency for the CPU. Similarly, the GPU runs at a 10% higher frequency while reducing power usage by 30%. Overall, the new chip promises 15% power savings in the SoC.
Qualcomm also said that the 7th Gen Qualcomm AI Engine in the new chip promises up to 20% better performance per Watt to enable ultra-advanced AI use cases across the board.
The rest of the hardware inside the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is the same. It can support up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM (3,200MHz), UFS 3.1 storage, display of QHD+ at up to 144Hz or 4K at 60Hz, 10-bit rendering, and HDR10+.
For connectivity, it also retains the Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System, and Qualcomm FastConnect 6900 Mobile Connectivity System for Wi-Fi speeds of up to 3.6 Gbps, over Wi-Fi 6 and 6E. Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity includes aptX Lossless and Bluetooth LE Audio.
Moreover, with its triple 18-bit Spectra ISP, the processor can still handle up to 200MP sensors and 8K video capture at 30fps (4K at 120fps).
According to Qualcomm, the first Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 devices will be available from Q3 2022. It will power the devices of leading global OEMs and brands including ASUS ROG, Black Shark, HONOR, iQOO, Lenovo, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, OSOM, realme, RedMagic, Redmi, vivo, Xiaomi, and ZTE.
